After the state allowed the use of medical marijuana in 2015, the General Assembly finally passed a bill<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ajc.com\/news\/state--regional-govt--politics\/georgia-medical-marijuana-sales-win-approval-but-with-limitations\/wdTEc474P5612ZP8h0tJfL\/\" rel=\"noopener\"> permitting<\/a> marijuana production and sale in Georgia and now applications are open.<\/p>\n<p>The Georgia Access to Medical Cannabis Commission unanimously approved the process that will allow nearly 14,000 registered patients in Georgia to obtain oil for treatment in the state. Production licenses are expected to be issued by March 2021.\u200b<\/p>\n<h2>Types of Cannabis Licenses in Georgia<\/h2>\n<h3>Georgia Medical Marijuana Class 1 Producer License<\/h3>\n<p>The Class 1 Production License <a href=\"https:\/\/law.justia.com\/codes\/georgia\/2019\/title-16\/chapter-12\/article-9\/part-2\/section-16-12-211\/\" rel=\"noopener\">authorizes<\/a> a licensee to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Grow cannabis only in indoor facilities for use in producing low THC oil, limited to 100,000 square feet of cultivation space<\/li>\n<li>Manufacture low THC oil<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The commission will issue two Class 1 production licenses.<\/p>\n<h3>Georgia Medical Marijuana Class 2 Producer License<\/h3>\n<p>Class 2 Production License authorizes a licensee to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Grow cannabis only in indoor facilities for use in producing low THC oil, limited to 50,000 square feet of cultivation space<\/li>\n<li>Manufacture low THC oil<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The commission shall issue four Class 2 production licenses.<\/p>\n<h2>Number of Cannabis Production Licenses in Georgia<\/h2>\n<p>Georgia does establish a very limited number of licenses to be issued statewide. The state allows six licenses to be issued for the cultivation of medical marijuana, which can have no more than 5% THC.<\/p>\n<p>The commission will award licenses to two 100,000-square-foot facilities and four 50,000-square foot facilities.<\/p>\n<h2>What Cannabis Products Can A Class 1 and Class 2 Medical Marijuana Licencee Produce?<\/h2>\n<p>Georgia laws allow a Class 1 and Class 2 Production License to produce low-THC oil. Also, a \u201cseed-to-sale\u201d tracking to account for the product\u2019s whereabouts throughout production is required. Law enforcement will be allowed to inspect the facility on demand.<\/p>\n<h2>Can Applications Be Submitted For Both Class 1 And Class 2 Production License?<\/h2>\n<p>Georgia law does not prohibit submitting a proposal for both Class 1 and Class 2 Production Licenses.
