Decriminalization of Cannabis in Louisiana<\/strong><\/h2>\n

History has recently been made after the state\u2019s legislature voted for the decriminalization of cannabis in Louisiana.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The senate voted 20-17 in favor of House Bill 652, introduced by State Rep. Cedric Glover, the bill aim is to decriminalize the possession of small amounts of marijuana for personal use in Louisiana.<\/p>\n

According to Louisiana criminal law, illegal possession of a controlled substance carries penalties ranging from six months in jail to 20 years in prison.<\/p>\n

Here are the details on the recently passed bill that decriminalizes cannabis in Louisiana<\/a>:<\/p>\n

Is Cannabis legal in Louisiana now?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Unfortunately, no. Recreational marijuana has not been legalized in the state. Earlier this year a bill that attempted to legalize cannabis died in the House of Representatives.<\/p>\n

What does the new bill do?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

House Bill 652 is a decriminalization bill, which means that it removes the possibility of jail or prison time for people caught with small amounts of cannabis.<\/p>\n

The bill makes the possession of 14 grams or less a misdemeanor in all cases and also limits fines to $100, eliminating jail time.<\/p>\n

What was the situation before the decriminalization of cannabis in Louisiana?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Louisiana\u2019s criminal law states that illegal possession of a controlled substance could get you anywhere from six months in jail to 20 years in prison.<\/p>\n

Further, first offenders in possession of 14 grams or less of marijuana were punishable by a fine of up to $300 with the possibility of up to 15 days in prison.<\/p>\n

First offenders with more than 14 grams had to pay up to $500 and\/or serve six months in prison.<\/p>\n

Can I buy cannabis in Louisiana?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

As for now, Louisiana has a medical marijuana program, in which you can buy cannabis -although not in raw or smokeable forms- in any medical marijuana dispensary for which you would need to have a medical prescription.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, the legalization of adult-use cannabis seems inevitable, the only question being when it is going to happen.<\/p>\n
